A rather attractive, medium-sized fritillary with noticeable rounded wings, found in association with its larval hostplant bramble. I encountered several whilst doing the Camino in Galicia, Spain where it was one of the few fritillaries flying.

Distribution: Southern and Central Europe, from northern Spain eastwards. Absent from some of the Mediterranean islands and from much of Iberia.

Flight Period: Late May-August in 1 brood.

Habitat: Woodland clearings and margins, flowery scrub, field margins at a variety of altitudes.

Foodplants: Brambles (Rubus).

Nectar Sources: Brambles (Rubus), clovers (Trifolium), Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum), knapweeds (Centaurea), thistles (Cirsium).
