This butterfly is aptly named as it has a preference for wooded areas and will frequently bask on tree trunks in dappled shade. It is similar to the Rock Grayling but is on average a bit bigger with no significant indent along the white margin on the underside.

Distribution: South and central Europe, from the Pyrenean foothills eastwards. Absent from Mediterranean islands except Sicily.

Flight Period: June-September in 1 brood.

Habitat: Woodland margins, clearings, wooded scrub at low to moderate altitudes.

Foodplants: Grasses, such as bromes (Bromus).

Nectar Sources: Not an avid feeder, but will occasionally take nectar from thistles (Cirsium), knapweeds (Centaurea), teasels (Dipsacus), Elder (Sambucus nigra), Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) and several other plants found in its habitat.
