In Ireland, this dainty butterfly is only found in the Burren, although it is widespread in mainland Europe. It has a weak floppy flight and frequently stops to rest. It is superficially similar to the Cryptic Wood White, found elsewhere in Ireland.

Distribution: Most of Europe. Absent from northern Fennoscandia, Netherlands, Denmark, northern Germany and much of Britain.

Flight Period: In Ireland it flies June-August, but can be seen March-October in southern Europe.

Habitat: Woodland margins, damp meadows, scrub at low to moderate altitudes.

Foodplants: Greater Bird’s-foot Trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus), Meadow Vetchling (Lathyrus pratensis), Bird’s-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), Tufted Vetch (Vicia cracca) and others.

Nectar sources: Bird’s-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), vetches (Vicia), brambles (Rubus), bugles (Ajuga).
