The males of this  high mountain species are very dark, almost as dark as the Black Ringlet of the Balkans. It is an endemic of SW Europe, found in areas of scree and grassy mountain slopes at high altitudes. Curiously I found it to be more abundant at the lower end of its altitudinal range in the Pyrenees, at around 1700m.

Distribution: Spain and France, where it is restricted to the Picos de Europa and the Pyrenees.

Flight Period: Late June – August in 1 brood.

Habitat: Grassy, rocky mountain slopes, scree from 1600-2700m.

Foodplants: Grasses such as fescues (Festuca) and meadow grasses (Poa).

Nectar Sources: Occasionally visits flowers such as Allium, scabiouses (Knautia) or thymes (Thymus).
