In Ireland this species is virtually identical to the Wood White, however the latter only flies in the Burren in Ireland, where the Cryptic Wood White is absent.  The situation is made more complicated on the continent where both species can fly together, making identification in the field practically impossible. It is a relatively small white, with a dainty appearance and a floppy flight. It is widespread but often local, shying away from intensively-farmed areas.

Distribution: Widespread in Ireland. Its continental European distribution is somewhat unclear as its relationship with the Wood White is still being researched. I believe it occurs in Sweden, parts of the Balkan Peninsula, Romania, Sweden, France and Germany.

Flight Period: One generation from late April-early June.

Habitat: Meadows, light scrub, woodland edges, fields, disused quarries at low-medium altitudes.

Foodplants: Various vetches (Vicia), particularly Meadow Vetchling (Lathyrus pratensis).

Nectar Sources: Bush Vetch (Vicia sepium), Meadow Vetchling (Lathyrus pratensis), Bird’s-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), dandelions (Taraxacum), Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum), Greater Stitchwort (Stellaria holostea).
