This species is very similar to the Nickerl’s Fritillary also found in eastern Europe, but it generally has darker heavier markings on the upperside and a more contrasting underside. In some cases the only reliable separation is to examine the genitalia, (something for which I did not have the equipment to do) so I have identified the individuals photographed here using the external features as best I could. It is evaluated as Near Threatened in Europe.
