This species is endemic to Europe, where it exists only in the southwest. It typically has fewer brown upperside markings and is more ‘orange’ when compared to the similar Provencal or Heath Fritillaries. I found it to be fairly abundant in the Pyrenees where it flew alongside the Heath, False Heath and Lesser Marbled Fritillaries.
Distribution: Iberian Peninsula, most of France, extreme NW of Italy, parts of Switzerland and SW Germany. Absent from S Portugal and NE France.
Flight Period: May-August in 2 broods. Single-brooded (June-July) at altitude.
Habitat: Woodland edges and clearings, grassy areas, meadows from 400-2400m.
Foodplants: Various Plantains (Plantago).
Nectar Sources: Hawkweeds (Hieracium), scabiouses (Knautia), knapweeds (Centaurea) and other flowers. Often takes nutrients from damp ground at higher levels.
