The High Brown is a similar species to the Dark Green Fritillary, and is most readily distinguished by the presence of white-pupilled spots on its underside. It also generally has reduced amounts of green on its underside and more pointed wings. It is a strong-flying species of wooded clearings. It is a widespread species although I have never found it to be common.
Distribution: Most of Europe, but absent from Ireland, most of Britain, northern Fennoscandia and most Mediterranean islands.
Habitat: Woodland clearings and edges, lightly-wooded scrub.
Flight Period: Late May-August in one brood.
Foodplants: Various species of Violet (Viola).
Nectar Sources: Thistles (Cirsium), knapweeds (Centaurea), brambles (Rubus), scabiouses (Succisa, Knautia), thymes (Thymus) etc.
