This is one of Ireland’s commonest shieldbugs and is fairly distinct in its appearance. It is rather large and broad in shape with a green upperside and dull brownish wing membrane, although newly emerged adults are uniform green. Adults turn a dull greenish-brown prior to hibernation, although this does not seem to occur in all individuals. Nymphs are similar in appearance but with black markings.
Distribution in Ireland: Formerly a more southerly species, it is now widespread across the island, although somewhat more local in the most northerly areas.
Habitat: Utilises a wide range of habitats including scrub, woodland edges, grassland margins, parks and gardens.
Habits: Adults and nymphs are herbivorous and feed on a wide range of herbaceous plants, which is where they are most likely to be found. Plants such as Bramble, Rosebay Willowherb, Hawthorn, Blackthorn etc. can all be productive although it can use many more. Overwintering sites are varied and may include leaf litter, grassy tussocks and evergreen vegetation such as Gorse, Ivy or coniferous trees.
