The Ottoman Brassy Ringlet is part of a complicated group of similar species. As its name suggests it flies primarily in southeast Europe and is the only one of the Brassy Ringlets flying in the Velebit Mountains, where I found several individuals, allowing me to reliably identify them as this species.
Distribution: NE Italy and scattered throughout the Balkans and Greece. Also found in a small area in the Massif-Central in France.
Flight Period: Mid July-August.
Habitat: Grassy hillsides, alpine meadows, open clearings in Beech and Pine woodland. Often found in rocky terrain. 900-2400m.
Foodplants: Sheep’s Fescue.
Nectar Sources: A wide variety of mountain flowers. Also feeds off dung and damp mud.
