One of the most impressive European butterflies, this large species has a striking underside with a rich orange border around the upperwing. It flies incredibly fast; almost bat-like and doesn’t stop often, making it difficult to photograph. It seems quite territorial, resting on prominent branches for long periods of time before zooming off at break-neck speeds to investigate or ward off another passing butterfly or large insect. Hill-topping is another behavioural trait of this species. It is the sole European representative of a genus of butterflies which are widespread in Africa.
Distribution: Southern Europe around the Mediterranean; not often seen far inland.
Flight Period: Double brooded; flying from May-October.

Foodplants: Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo).
Nectar Sources: Doesn’t take nectar from flowers; prefers to feed on rotting fruit, dung, carrion; even alcoholic drinks.
