A true woodland species, this butterfly frequents areas of dappled sunlight where it can blend in rather well. It is fairly common in Ireland.  I have also observed it in southern Portugal where the form  aegeria occurs, which has orange patches rather than cream; as seen in the tircis form which occurs in Ireland.

Distribution: Most of Europe except northern Fennoscandia.

Flight Period: April-October in three broods.

Habitat: Woodland clearings and edges, field margins, parks, mature scrub up to 1500m.

Foodplants: Various grasses (Poaceae).

Nectar Sources: Rarely seen nectaring, but will occasionally feed on brambles (Rubus), Elder (Sambucus nigra), Hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium), Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) and Ivy (Hedera helix).
