A large and impressive grayling. This species has a striking underwing pattern which also provides excellent camouflage. It is a strong flier and likes to bask in the shade under trees. I have observed it both in southern Portugal and southern Spain and in both situations individuals frequently basked in the shade cast by the pine and oak trees in the area, probably to escape the intense midday heat.
