This butterfly has only recently been given species rank after a series of mitochondrial DNA tests by leading European butterfly experts, which revealed that it was different from the Common Brassy Ringlet. Compared to its relatives, it has well-developed hindwing eyespots and a reduced orange-red band on the upperside forewing and an overall paler appearance.
Distribution: Confined to the Pyrenees of Spain and France, the Massif Central in France and the Italian Apennines.
Flight Period: Late June – September in one brood.
Habitat: Grassy mountainsides, grassy scree above 1500m to 2600m.
Foodplants: Grasses such as Sheep’s Fescue (Festuca ovina).
Nectar Sources: Not an avid nectar feeder but will occasionally visit various mountain flowers. Also takes nutrients from dung or damp ground.
