This lovely species has a distinct scalloped hindwing, making identification fairly easy. Like many blues, the male is more often seen than the female, who lies low among vegetation searching for egg-laying sites. It can be fairly common in suitable habitats and in Paklenica NP in Croatia it was quite abundant in many of the small woodland clearings.
Distribution: Hilly areas of eastern Spain, southern France, western Italy, Switzerland, the Balkans and Greece; usually more abundant in the eastern part of its range.
Flight Period: June-August in 1 brood.
Habitat: Calcareous grassland, scrub, woodland clearings and margins; usually on limestone from 200-1700m.
Foodplants: Crown Vetch (Securigera varia).
Nectar Sources: Eryngium, scabiouses (Knautia), thistles (Cirsium), thymes (Thymus) etc.
